Deepavali Valthukel from MASAT!

On the 25th of October, MASAT organized a Diwali brunch get together. Diwali, also known as Deepavali, or the festival of lights is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn. It is a celebration of light’s triumph over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair. There are many preparation and rituals related to the festival but we celebrated it the way most Malaysians celebrate any events; good food and even better companies.

TalentCorp Visits UofT Again

On Saturday, October 18, 2014, the TalentCorp Students MY team visited UofT to engage with the Malaysian student population here in the University. The last time TalentCorp visited UofT was back in 2012, and we were thrilled when they gracefully agreed to drop by UofT once again.
Dress to impress.
This time around, in addition to the regular networking dinner, the TalentCorp team had two other events - the Mock Interview and Dragon's Den. The Mock Interview was a platform for interested students to polish their resumés and  interview skills by being placed in interview mode by the TalentCorp team. The Dragon's Den was an opportunity for students to pitch for projects that will benefit them and the community professionally, where successful projects will be funded by TalentCorp all the way till its execution.

We had two participants each for both the Mock Interview and Dragon's Den, and approximately 45 attendees filling up MP103 to listen to the presentation from TalentCorp's Ms. Yazmin Azman. The two-hour presentation felt rather short, mainly attributed to Ms. Yazmin's unique way of engaging with the audience. Many attendees, when asked after the session, felt that the session was very beneficial and corrected their perceptions and understanding of TalentCorp and what they do.

Of course, an event is considered un-Malaysian if it is missing one important thing - you guessed it - food. Due to the generosity of TalentCorp and Uncle Howard of Restoran Malaysia, attendees were served with authentic Malaysian food such as Nasi Goreng, Mee Goreng, Rendang Ayam, Sambal Ikan, Kerabu Timun, and not forgetting Air Sirap. There was so much food that President Fathuddin had to send out an announcement asking Malaysians within the vicinity to come with their food containers to tapau the leftovers.

MASAT expresses their utmost gratitude to Ms. Yazmin and Ms. Amirah of TalentCorp for their visit to UofT, and we hope to host them again next year.

A Thanksgiving to Remember

Hey it’s Thanksgiving again! Turkey, Turkey, Turkey!!!

Like previous years, the annual Thanksgiving soccer and potluck was also hosted by our lovely associate; the Malaysian Students Association of McMaster University (MyMAC) in Hamilton, Ontario, this year on Saturday, October 11.

The morning kicked off with the traditional friendly football match between MASAT and MyMAC. This is the fourth time the event was held, and for the past three years, luck was not on our side when it came to the football match. Well, as fate wold have it, this year proved to be MASAT's era of sports glory. After the phenomenal wins during MySukan 2014 in Ottawa, the winning streak continued with MASAT 'slaughtering' MyMAC a staggering 4-1!

Football!
After the game, we were invited by the hosts for lunch at one of their houses with their home made roasted turkey topping the agenda. This year, MyMAC was generous enough to roast 3 turkeys to fill up our stomach.
Yummy! It was finger lickin' good
Big crowd eh?
Although the day was a little bit chilly, it continued on being more and more interesting. We took the opportunity of being in Hamilton to see its wonderful geography. Webster Falls was so amazing, just like the Niagara Falls but a lot smaller. We hiked to Dundas Peak to enjoy the view of the sunset. But sadly, the disappearing of the sun over the horizon tell us that we should be heading home.

Webster Falls - seems like magic realism, doesn't it?

Selamat Hari Raya Aidiladha 1436H from MASAT!

AidilAdha, an Eid celebration for fellow Muslims around the globe fell on October 4 this year. Despite being far from home, we still managed to make the atmosphere here in Toronto much like home. The Muslim members kickstarted the day by performing Eid prayers and the Takbir (call of worship) at the Direct Energy Center.

Look who showed up - Toronto mayoral candidate John Tory!

Mr. Tory and Ahmad Zahir (Ex-VP)

Later that day, a "makan-makan" gathering was held at the recreational area of an apartment building in Elm Street, where the family of Ustaz Jameer, fellow Malaysian, reside. Everyone shared their love through cooking of the traditional dishes such as Rendang, Ketupat and also kuih-muih (dessert). Performance of nasyeed entertained the crowd during the "makan-makan" session. The day went so well and everyone went home with filled stomachs and smiles.

MySukan 2014 - MASAT's Era of Sports Glory

We are the Champions!

For the first time in MASAT history, after 3 years of trying, we finally brought home the trophy! This year, MySukan was held at the University of Ottawa, five hours away from Downtown Toronto. The road trip bonded the contingent better prior the event. This year, MASAT sent a lethal contingent that successfully dominated almost every game during the event.
Toronto White and Blue
MASAT Netballers
Male badminton team
Female badminton team
For football, both teams Toronto Blue and Toronto White made it to the finals and secured the gold and silver medal for the contingent. The netball team was insane, beating the Carleton squad mercilessly and added another gold to the contingent's collection. As for the Badminton team, the mens’ team managed to win silver while the girls’ team won gold. The bowling squad bowled their way to a silver medal. The MASAT contingent also participated in non-medal events such the Explorace (1st place), Congkak (2nd place) and Chess (1st place).

Final : Toronto White vs Toronto Blue
Badminton, female - GOLD
Badminton, male - SILVER
Soccer, Toronto White - SILVER
Soccer, Toronto Blue - GOLD
Netball - GOLD
Overall winner! Not Fathuddin but MASAT
This was the best MySukan so far for MASAT (because we won). May we continue to be the victors in the coming MySukans.

MASAT Orientation Picnic in High Park

Welcome, first years!

It's fall again, with the Sun, the breeze and the dramatic colors of the leaves. Simply said, the best season of the year!

Finally, after several years of decline, we are happy to see a spike in Malaysians coming to UofT. Thank you, current members for promoting and attracting more juniors to come here! This year we have 21 newly registered members which is much more than last year.
Some of our first years

We celebrated the first years differently this time. Instead of our traditional welcoming BBQ, we organized the orientation at the highest place in Toronto - High Park (haha.....) The event was held on Sunday, September 21, 2014. The weather that day was splendid (thank God!), despite the high chance of rain. Our senior members mingled around with our fellow first years and made them feel welcomed. Attendees enjoyed the three games planned for them - MAFIA, Rock-Paper-Scissors, and Jeopardy.

Not forgetting, it is not a Malaysian event unless there's food, so, on that fine day, everyone was served Mee Goreng and Ayam Goreng specially prepared by Mr President himself.

And on this beatiful day, one lucky first year was elected the First year Representative of the MASAT Executive Committee.

Activity Summary for First Quarter (April - June 2014)

Greetings from the new Executive Team!

First, our apologies for the stagnancy of this page. It has been very hectic for the previous and present committee in getting housekeeping matters sorted out, and we are now able to move on to the next stage.

Since the new committee took office on April 4, we had two events in the first quarter, namely the 2014 BBQ/Potluck and the Grad Lunch.

The 2014 BBQ/Potluck took place on Sunday, May 11, at McCaul-Orde Park. We had approximately 35 attendees, and the weather was spectacular that day. Apart from the usual Malaysian 'makan' ceremony, we had frisbee games during the event.

About a month after that, on June 7, we hosted the annual Graduation Lunch. Held at the Multi-Faith Centre of the University of Toronto, we had 30 attendees consisting of graduated students and parents. Despite several hiccups, the event was overall a success, especially the food, gifts, and the 'Down Memory Lane' corner, where photographs of the graduates throughout their four to five years in UofT were up on display.

The second quarter activity report will be published soon , so stay tuned for  more updates on this website.

FUMAS 2013/2014 - Final Standings

The Futsal MASAT (FUMAS) concluded the last week of the tournament last weekend, with the last match between RumahKuning and Biceps. An important match, since it will determine the winner of the tournament. With both team has 7 points and THORgan sit at the top of the table with 9 points, RumahKuning and Biceps will go top if they win the match.

RumahKuning looks to be the favourite in this match, since they beat Biceps when they faced each other a couple months before. But, it is Biceps who starts the score with 2 goals in the first half.

All is not lost for RumahKuning since their 'underdog' striker, Fathuddin strikes a hat-trick, one in the first half and another two in the second half. 3-2. The score is 4-2 when Amin Ramily put the ball into the net. Biceps returned with another goal. There's still 5 minutes left on the clock when Kong scores the last goal of the match. Final score: RumahKuning 4 - 4 Biceps.

Which makes both team has a total of 8 points. So, THORgan is crowned the champion of FUMAS 2013/2014.
